Orthotics & Prosthetics

Welcome to the CSUDH MS Orthotics & Prosthetics Program

Applications for Fall 2025 available August 1!

The California State University Dominguez Hills Orthotic and Prosthetic Program has a long history of preparing clinicians for an incredibly rewarding career working with patients in the field of O&P. From the undergraduate beginnings in 1983 through the formulation of our Certificate Programs in 1995 to the elevation to a Masters degree in 2012, and the introduction of the latest technology and robotics, our purpose throughout has been to train and educate students to be the best clinicians to serve the amputee and device using community.

Who This Program Is For

When students enter the program, they are given extensive hands-on training in a simulated clinical setting, seeing patients from evaluation to delivery while under the direct supervision of our experienced faculty. They also rotate into multiple prosthetic and orthotic clinics to enhance their patient care skills as they matriculate through the program. Active clinical rotations are in place with large and small private O&P providers including Veteran's Administration Medical Centers in Long Beach and Los Angeles, Hanger’s major central fabrication facility, Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center, and the Balboa Naval Medical Center’s C-5 program in San Diego, where combat wounded soldiers are receiving treatment.

Our students are our most valuable resource. Each student makes a unique contribution to the Program, and is recognized as an individual. We work together as a team to provide the highest quality patient outcomes, and our students thrive in an environment that combines academic, clinical, and research components that lead to successful practice as an O&P professional. To quote the CSUDH mission statement, our program "provides our communities with a vital resource for talent, knowledge, skills, and leadership needed to thrive today and tomorrow."

Our Location: O&P IS RETURNING HOME!

Currently housed off-campus, the CSUDH Orthotic and Prosthetic Education Center is a 12,000 square foot facility in Los Alamitos containing both class rooms and laboratory spaces. We provide state-of-the-art training utilizing the latest technology, research, materials and methods.

We are thrilled to announce the relocation of the Orthotics & Prosthetics program from its current location in Los Alamitos back to CSUDH’s campus in Carson!

The new Orthotics & Prosthetics Education Center will benefit students and faculty, increase community engagement, encourage interprofessional collaboration, and support the
program’s growth. The move will strengthen this already distinguished program, creating new career paths, helping to meet the needs of underserved Los Angeles County residents, and allowing access to interdisciplinary approaches to physical and mental healthcare.

With plans to move in by November 2025, we have a unique opportunity to make the facility a primary center for prosthetics repair and service during the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics games taking place in Los Angeles.

What is Orthotics and Prosthetics?

Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) is the evaluation, fabrication and custom fitting of artificial limbs and orthopedic braces. O&P is an allied health profession with a variety of exciting employment opportunities available.

Prosthetists provide patients with prostheses (artificial limbs) to replace an amputated hand, arm, foot or leg. The goal of the prosthetist is to provide the patient with increased function, such as walking or grasping.

Orthotists provide patients with orthoses (braces) that restore function, or stabilize the part of the body in question. Orthotic application include the spine, cranium, and extremities after injury or disease. The goal of the orthotist is to provide the patient with protection, support, and increased function.
