Asian & Pacific Cultural Center

History

The Asian & Pacific Cultural Center (APCC) was established in Fall 2021. Nathan Nguyen, its inaugural program director, was hired in October 2021 to begin the development of a center dedicated to Asian & Pacific Islander student success at CSUDH.


The Asian & Pacific Cultural Center began providing in-person programs and services in Spring 2022. In Fall 2022, through student activism and conversations with campus leaders, a temporary space in WH 250 was designated for our center. In Spring 2023, we opened our doors to students and the campus community.


Today, the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center is the cultural home for API students at CSUDH where community, belonging, learning, and engagement are instruments toward personal, academic, and professional success of API students. We support API student success by targeting three areas: 1) cultural-well-being, 2) social-emotional well-being, 3) academic/professional well-being.

Mission

The Asian & Pacific Cultural Center’s mission is to enhance and support API student engagement & belonging. We accomplish this by providing an inclusive space with programs and partnerships that focus learning, academic integration, community building, belonging, and cultural engagement.

Goals

Cultural Well-being. Through cultural programs and celebrations that highlight and visibilize the API community on campus, we empower students to feel seen, heard, and connected. We engage students in learning and development through the lenses of racial-justice, critical reflection, inclusion, culture, and art, to encourage identity development and greater awareness of self and others. The center itself is a curated and inclusive space that creates a cultural home on campus for students.

Social-Emotional Well-being. Through community building with relevant programs, activities, and celebrations that reflect the broad Asian & Pacific experience, we aim to support the holistic wellness of students.

Academic Well-being. Through activities that center learning integration, providing study space, tutoring, and close connections with student success centers, we promote student academic success, agency, and critical inquiry. 

Professional Well-being. Through leadership development for API student leaders, clubs and organizations, and collaboration with campus partners, we guide students to engage in opportunities for career and professional growth.

Advocacy. We advocate for student wellness and success through providing and connecting students to on-campus and off-campus resources. Our work extends to greater campus efforts and initiatives toward API student success.
